>> it's been an active week and we are not done yet. we want to start you off with the travel delays. this is the weekend and you may be getting up to tahoe. we want to give you a quick heads up. san francisco is experiencing about an hour and a half delays. all others are pretty good. no major delays are good. the roadways are wet and slick. we still do have a flash flood watch in effect not only for the santa cruz mountains, but the north bay and a flood warning in effect near napa because of all the rain that has fallen, a lot of the ground is saturate and it doesn't have anywhere to go. it goes from the creeks and the rivers and all that was stuff is rising. we are looking at flash flooding across the area. the jet stream is positioned right over us and we have moisture against the coast.

no heavy rain to report right now, but light showers stressing over from morgan hill through the santa cruz mountains and you work your way up through the peninsula. in san francisco, light showers and even hayward seeing light showers. we are not done yet even though we won't see a lot of heavy rain. the next storm system that arrives will be very heavy. the next front tomorrow morning around this time and in the time frame from 5:00 to 9:00 tomorrow morning, we could be looking at one to three inches of rain and the potential for four inches plus in the mountains that include the santa cruz and north bay mountains. wind gusts 40 to 60 and the mountains could reach 1 helped helped miles per hour. rivers are rising to some which would be in moderate flood stage. for today temperatures will be cool. you need a jacket and nothing

heavy until tonight. we will detail the timing and who is actually in the risk to see these rivers rise in just a little bit. back to you. >> thank you very much. as anthony mentioned, several places where flooding is a serious concern this weekend and that includes the peninsula. many people in palo alto and menlo park are knee deep. the creek has a history of flooding banks and hundreds of homes are in its path. the people there are wondering how much more rain that creek can take. >> it was february 1998. >> there was no warning. >> the waters from the san francisquito creek swept into the palo alto home. >> once it comes over the threshold, you just look at it and you think oh!

price they paid. if there is another flood -- >> we will move someplace else. >> i don't have the strength i had 14 years ago to do all the things we did. i feel much more vulnerable. >> nbc bay area news. >> the joint powers authority board plans to approve a project that would widen the creek and build levees and flood walls. if the funding is there, construction could begin next year. >> the wet roads could be to blame for a car crash in which a young child was seriously injured. the child was airlifted from the scene of the crash that happened on westbound highway 4 west of laurel yesterday afternoon. several cars were involved in the crash. authorities say the child was thrown from the car that he was in. a woman in the same car was also injured. no word on their condition this morning. >> in san francisco a large tree crashed down, smashing into a mercedes and it happened in the

heavy wind and rain near pine and buchanan in the lower pacific heights neighborhood. the road was partially closed as the troee trimmers hauled it away. >> look at recent outages from pg&e. we are looking at small outages across the bay area. the green arrows there are affecting customers from to about 50 customers. for up to date information, you can visit pg&e's website and click on the outages map and get updated information where you live. >> the rain is a worry in the sierra. a live look at truckee. the truckee river could see a rise of six feet this weekend. the national weather service said the river could reach flood stage by sunday morning, putting riverside homes at risk. despite all of the water, downtown truckee should not be

millionaire and former owner of the famed mountain winery. when he was killed, his wife was by his side. today in the bay spoke with neighbors who are in disbelief. >> as detectives look for a killer or killer, a family member confirmed her uncle was the who was killed early friday morning in his 7,000 square foot mansion. it's the first homicide in 40 years in this upscale and exclusive community. neighbors are shocked. >> i think it's crazy and scary. >> his niece told nbc bay area her uncle owned the mountain winery in the late 90s and was a multimillionaire. police said his wife called 911. >> that woman reported that someone had broken into her house and ransacked it. she was injured and needed help. >> she had been beaten and her husband dead-on the floor. there was at least one intruder, possibly in the home.

. >> this morning members of the federal investigators are at the site of a train derailment that led to a hazardous materials spill in new jersey. seven train cars derailed early yesterday morning and four tankers ended up in the water below and at least one released dangerous gasses into the air. more than 40 people were treated

smelling roses this morning. for just the second time in 40 years, stanford is headed to the rose bowl. rain made the grass just a little slick, but that didn't phase the cardinals or the ucla bruins as both traded touchdowns back and forth. in the end, stanford pulled off the nail-biting victory, 27-24. >> we play with a chip on our shoulder and our mantra has been to be loose and focused and putting the chip on our shoulder, our guys have done that. part was to prove we are not a one-man organization here. >> the coach set a foundation and the players kept that going and held people accountable. >> stanford will play the winner of the title game between nebraska and wisconsin on new year's day. it was a muddy mess for fans who went to the game last night. much of the parking lot at the

amount. none the less, we have flash flood watches and warnings in place through the rest of the weekend. you can see a wide variation again. san francisco only a little more than two inches of rain. it's hit and miss as far as the flooding. everybody expected to see more rain today and again for tomorrow. you can see the showers are making their way through as we speak and even from the cameras you saw earlier, light showers and all of this will be light. we are not looking at torrential downpours as we saw earlier, but tomorrow we have one more wave that will move through and that's going to produce about to four inches of rain and only about four hours. we are looking at the rainfall rate tomorrow from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. one inch of rain per hour. this is going to be a heavy rainmaker as it comes through tomorrow and you can see on the satellite it's exploding across parts of the north part of hawaii. this is the pineapple express

that will slide along the jet stream. around this time, we will look at heavy rain across the bay area and flash flooding will be a concern tomorrow. all of the rivers and creeks will be rising through the day tomorrow and it will make for treacherous travel. to break it down, 1 to three inches of rain for everybody. getting up into the mountains. wind gusts tomorrow and gust being 60 miles per hour. up into the mountain, gusts up to 100 miles per hour especially in the tahoe area. this will be a very strong system when it moves through. tonight here's the appetizer. 8:00 this evening, the showers begin and they don't let up until tomorrow after 9:00 or 10:00. 6:00 in the morning, the shower guess through santa rosa and napa and txe south bay by 10:00. by tomorrow afternoon, we are done with the rainfall.

we have been telling you about the rivers, we have the russian river at 24 feet right now. it is expected to crest on monday near 34 feet and that is just shy of a moderate flood stage. the napa river near st. helena. this is a moderate flood stage come sunday. tomorrow the napa river is expected to go to a moderate flood stage. if you live near that, heads up. everyone expecting to see 1 to three inches of rain possible and temperatures are not going to be the story. it will be cool and you need those jackets. let's skip ahead and you notice on and off showers. keep the umbrella handy for the first half of the day tomorrow. if you have traveling to do tomorrow, i can't stress this enough. four hours from 5:00 to 9:00 is when we expect the heaviest of rain. travel cautiously. >> or wait. >> until the afternoon.

>> the u.s. supreme court did not indicate they will hear california's prop 8 case. supporters are left waiting once again. the justices could announce as early as monday or at some point later next week. california voters passed prop 8 in 2008 which bans gay marriage, but a san francisco appeals court ruled that the law was unconstitutional. same-sex marriages could proceed right away if they opt not to hear the case. the city and county clerks are calling the attorney general's office to ask for advice on how to prepare in the event that

same-sex marriage is legal once again. there is a job in the bay area that pays 35 cents an hour and people are lining up for a chance to work. we are talking about felons at san quentin and these fellows are getting a lifeline and they are partnering with the prison and taking the concept of rehab to another world. suzanne shaw has the story. >> behind the daunting walls of san quentin state prison, inside this old machine shop, convicted felons are reaching for the stars. >> the whole nasa thing is just, wow. you don't even get that at the best technical school in the country. to get that in prison. >> studying math and science and under the strict supervision of nas a they are building cubes that may some day carry miniature satellites into space. >> do you actually program this?

about just a few showers and looking at delays, san francisco up to two hours and everywhere else things look good. the roadways and highways are slick. the watches are still in place for tomorrow. as you get towards the peninsula, the showers continue to stretch from morgan hill to the santa cruz mountains. spoty and not heavy, but hayward and oakland are seeing light shower and drizzle activity. this will be the case with lots of low clouds and fog and mist, but tomorrow the main system arrives and that will produce heavy rain in the short amount of time. from 5:00 to 9:00, wind gusts and heavy rain and rising rivers that break all of this down later in the program. enjoy the calm before the storm today.

43rd homicide of the year around 11:30 last night. they received a report of a shooting and when they arrived on scene, they found a 17-year-old boy dead. police are searching for suspects and say the killing appears to be gang-related. if so it would be the 16th gang-related homicide of the year. last year there were season. a homicide investigation that rocked the area of monte sereno. it is the first homicide there in 40 years. a family member confirmed to nbc bay area that he was the man killed friday morning in his 7,000 square foot mansion. 4s wife called 911 and she had been beaten. her husband was dead on the floor when they arrived. there was one intruder, possibly four of them in the home.

bit of rain. in san francisco the showers have fallen and visibility is poor. we are still report being a two-hour delay in san francisco airport, but otherwise you are not looking at any delays for the time being. a big area ex-pleding as well. that is the next batch of heavy precipitation due to arrive between 5:00 and 9:00 tomorrow. heavy rain from the satellite and this stuff is very expansive and getting caught right in the jet stream that will pull it this way. in the meantime, we are looking at a break between systems right now, but tomorrow again around this time, we will be looking at heavy rain and flash flooding will be imminent and strong wind gusts that will move through. this will be tropical storm force winds and some see winds up to 100 miles per hour even as we did a couple of days ago. about an 82 mile per hour wind gust on wednesday. it's going to be active once again as we head towards the

next 24 hours. spotty showers and nothing heavy. at least not warranting flash flooding for the time being, but the grounds are wet and spotty patches of showers in the east bay near livermore and oakland down through the peninsula. that's where the heavy stuff is falling. you can see again all of this is hit and miss and patchy. not everyone gets in on the heavy rain. that will arrive tomorrow. here's the futurecast. the showers arrive tonight around 8:00 in the north bay. the heaviest of rain and even to start the day tomorrow. as we move through the morning hours, that will be the worst. this line of storms will push through the south. about 8:00 and the east and south way get in on the rain and look what happens as we head towards 11:00. we are talking about sunshine. if you wake up late on sunday, you may not see any of this.

santa rosa and napa look at sunshine by tomorrow afternoon and that's going to extend all the way through the south bay by tomorrow. one quick reference. saturday, today, we are seeing the russian river at 24 feet. we will head through the course of tomorrow and monday and it will peak below moderate flood stage. you know the protocol. make sure you take at least a little advance notice at what's coming your way. it will be cool. grab a jacket. the flooding concern heightens and we can see two to four inches and it will come down in a short amount of time. flash flood watches and warnings for tomorrow. after tomorrow, things quiet down a little bit and another storm system not as strong hadded our way for tuesday and wednesday. i don't think we will look at flash flooding, but tomorrow we pay attention to the roadways and one thing the meteorologists say is turn around, don't drown.

this morning people in the bay area are joining others in commemorating world aids day. the first recorded case of aids was 31 years ago. more than 800 people are expected to hold a ceremony at groves meadow in golden gate park that focuses on the impact aids continues to have in the bay area and the world. they will remember those who died from aids and recognize progress made for ending the
